10. A certificate dated 25 March 1963 and written by Lieutenant Colonel Petkevičius, deputy chairman of the LSSR KGB, about the surveillance among intellectuals.

In this document, the KGB describes the prevailing moods among artists, disagreements between the old and new generation, processes and trends in the area of art, deviations from socialist realism, and the ‘negative’ impact of Western art trends. Information is provided about which pieces of art and creations of which artists (painters, composers, film producers) fail to comply with the criteria of socialist realism. Artists such as V. and S. Kisarauskas, J. Juzeliūnas, and L. Abarius were discussed in the KGB file.

14. 15 February 1963 KGB plan of measures to identify and prevent the ‘negative’ influence of the figures of independent Lithuania on youth and intellectuals.

In this letter, the KGB points out the influence of the figures of independent Lithuania who returned from exile and imprisonment and of Lithuanians abroad on the young generation of intellectuals and their creative work. Seeking to limit and neutralise this influence, the following action plan is provided: to neutralise and isolate the influence of intellectuals of independent Lithuania such as D. Cesevičius and J. Keliuotis on other intellectuals and to strengthen the activities of KGB agencies among the academic community (the Academy of Science, universities) and creative intellectual community (publishing houses, film studio, artists). In addition, to more closely monitor and control youth and the activities of young people and to take timely actions and countermeasures against anti-Soviet activities.

In this letter, the KGB directs the attention of the party to the ambiguous and changing position of Sirijos Gira with respect to the new government and of his creative work, which gives rise to suspicions since it fails to comply with the standards of socialist realism.
